Tall red pines canopy this picturesque campground next to the Bois Brule River. The campground has a fantastic backcountry atmosphere where pine needles carpet hilly terrain. Chipmunks and squirrels frequently visit with campers, and the distinctive calls of ravens can be heard throughout the day. Every campsite is within easy walking distance of the river and two walk-in/canoe sites offer riverside camping.
There are 22 non-electric campsites, all offer plenty of shade. 18 sites are available for tent and RV/trailer camping (back-in only) and one site is accessible. There are 4 walk-in tent sites, of which 2 are riverside canoe campsites (sites 7 & 8). All 22 sites are reservable, including both canoe campsites.
Campground amenities include drinking water (hand-pump) and accessible vault toilets. An artesian well is located near the DNR headquarters lower garage. Clean, hot showers and an RV dump station (fees apply) are available at the Brule River Motel one mile north of the campground on US Highway 2.
The roads through the campground are narrow with tight corners, so RV’s and camping trailers less than 30 feet are recommended. However, two sites can accommodate RV’s and trailers up to 45 feet.
River Camping
Bois Brule Campground is the first of two State Forest campgrounds on the north-flowing Bois Brule River. The second is the Copper Range Campground, 9.7 river miles downriver and 5.8 road miles to the north. The location of the two campgrounds creates easy logistics for fun canoe camping trips on an awesome river.
Both campgrounds feature developed landings with plenty of room to park your canoes overnight.
Trails & Places
The Stoney Hill Nature Trail is a popular hike for campers at the Bois Brule Campground. The trailhead is across Ranger Road near the campground exit, and another trail access is near the DNR Station.
Be sure to check out the Brule State Fish Hatchery (open 8am - 4pm) where visitors can walk among the raceways and ponds to see the trout. The Trout Rearing Station education building (free to the public) features interesting fish and wildlife exhibits.
