Beautiful, rolling terrain with dozens of small lakes, stands of birch and aspen, hardwood forests, and a large open meadow. 3 loop trails and a 7.6 mile segment of the Ice Age Trail pass through the property. The Intrerpretive Center features exhibits of mammal skeletons, live reptiles and amphibians, various species of fish, and an entire room filled with interesting displays about the geologic, natural, and cultural history of the region.
Three trails meander through a variety of habitats and forest types over uneven terrain. Expansive fern beds frequently surround the well-worn footpaths and flowering plants bloom at various times throughout the warm-weather seasons. Species include wood anemone, laurel, arbutus, sundew, starflowers, serviceberries, bog cranberry, and wintergreen, just to name a few. Birdlife is abundant. Expect to see and hear warblers, nuthatches, vireos, sparrows, woodpeckers, and chickadees, especially on early morning walks.
The Franklin Nature Trail is a mile-long, interpretive trail that loops through a forest of hardwoods, white pines, and shady stands of tall hemlocks. You will also find a scenic view of Butternut Lake, several historical sites, and a winding 400 foot-long boardwalk through a tamarack and spruce bog.
A peaceful, weekend camping destination that features a 3.4 mile-long flowage (411-acres) with a historic dam and recreation area. The width of the flowage ranges from 120 feet to 1,500 feet and features wooded islands, small peninsulas, and tiny bays that are fun to explore by canoe, kayak, or boat.
