Chippewa Campground is on the northeast shore of the Chequamegon Waters Flowage (2,714 acres), and is a popular destination for anglers. The flowage offers healthy populations of Yellow Perch, Black Crappie, Northern Pike, and Largemouth Bass. There is a lot of bottom structure (i.e. tree stumps), so expect plenty of fish, but also a few lost lures.
Paddlers and casual boaters will especially enjoy the wild lakeshore scenery along the east and south bays. Exploring the large marshy island in the center of the lake is fun on less windy days.
The campground also serves as the trailhead for the Perkinstown Motorized Trail, an excellent 20-mile ATV Trail through forests, wetlands and rolling hills with several scenic bridge crossings.
Many improvements were made to the campground in 2019 and 2020, including paved roads, paved accessible campsites (sites 12 & 14), and electric wells.
There are 78 campsites in four separate loops. Three loops have standard campsites: Rustic, Bass, and Beaver. The 19 sites in the Bass Loop have electric hookup (50 amp). A fourth loop offers 11 double sites for group camping where each site has two spurs and allows up 16 people. Bass Loop, Beaver Loop, and the ‘Group Sites’ loop have accessible heated shower buildings with accessible flush toilets. The Rustic Loop has accessible vault toilets only. All four loops have multiple electric wells (potable water). Other campground amenities include two sandy swimming beaches with picnic areas, a fishing pier (Beaver Loop), and a children’s playground. There is also an RV/trailer filling station (potable water) and dump station at the recreation area entrance. Both are free for registered campers.
Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, parking spur, and tent area. The entire campground sits in a maturing hardwood forest on mostly flat terrain, and every campsite is partial to fully shaded. Parking spurs are nicely level, and more than half can comfortably accommodate RV/trailers over 35 feet. Just be aware that the campground roads are narrow. 28 sites are reservable and 50 sites are available as first-come, first-served. Chippewa has multiple campground hosts. Their site numbers are posted at the entrance to each loop.
This is an excellent family campground, the amenities are modern and most campsites are spacious and offer comfortable levels of seclusion.
Lakeside Campsites with Lake Access:
There are no waterfront sites, but those closest to the lake have footpaths to the lakeshore.
A public boat landing has a gravel turnaround loop, gravel ramp, a trailer parking area, and a vault toilet.
Season
The campground is open from the third week of May through September. The Rustic Loop is open year-round for winter camping, however the roads are not plowed.
Registration
A self-registration kiosk is located near the campground entrance. You must register and pay before occupying a site. Reservable sites may be reserved online up to six months in advance. (please visit the reservations website for more details).
