Small and cozy, South Trout Lake Campground is in a great location to enjoy everything the State Forest and local area has to offer. The campground has direct access to the Heart of Vilas Bicycle Trail, and is at the south end of Lake Shore Drive and its scenic views of Trout Lake (3,864 acres). Minocqua is one of the most popular tourism communities in northern Wisconsin, and Main Street in Boulder Junction is well-known for its galleries and gift shops.
Mature hardwoods shade the campground and the sandy-bottomed creek that flows along its north edge. While none of the campsites are waterfront, the south end of Lake Shore Drive and its fantastic lake views are within easy walking, or bicycling distance of every campsite.
Trout Lake is essentially two lakes connected by a narrow channel in the middle and is popular for boating and fishing. For paddlers, six state forest primitive canoe campsites are spread out on the west shore.
The campground has 23 non-electric campsites. 19 sites are available for tent and RV/trailer camping (back-in only, length varies) and 4 are walk-in tent only. Two pairs of sites may be combined for small groups of up to 12 people. Site #1002 is the Campground Manager. Campground amenities include drinking water (hand pump) and vault toilets. A dump station is at the North Trout Lake Campground, 3 miles away. All 23 campsites require reservations.
A public boat landing is at the southwest end of the campground and has a paved ramp, launch pier, turnaround, and trailer parking area.
