Indian Mounds Campground is located near the site of four burial mounds left from the Woodland People who inhabited the region long ago. Today, a pine and hardwood forest shade this hilly, scenic campground on the shore of Lake Tomahawk (3,462 acres), part of the Minocqua Chain of Lakes. The lake chain is a magnet for summer vacationers who come to relax and enjoy the beautiful waters and fun atmosphere. Boating, pontoon boating and jet skiing are immensely popular. This is the only campground on the chain, and many bring their watercraft when they camp here. Minocqua is about 7.5 miles away on the water and 6.5 miles away by vehicle.

There are 39 non-electric campsites. All sites have plenty of shade. 31 sites are available for tent and RV/trailer camping (back-in only, max length varies) and 8 are walk-in tent only. Every campsite has a picnic table, fire ring, and parking spur. Site #6 is the campground host. Campground amenities include drinking water (hand pump) and accessible vault toilets. All 39 sites are reservable.

Five campsites, #32, #33, #34, #36, and #37 are directly lakefront facing west on flat terrain. Each site has open views of the water. Two south-facing campsites, #19 and #21, overlook the lake from a shady hillside with partial views of the lake through a thin layer of pines.

Walk-in tent sites: #24, #25, #26, and #27 are on a low hill and offer good privacy. Sites #24, #25, & #27 are in especially scenic settings with partial views of the lake through foliage. Each has shoreline access down steep footpaths.

In the northwest corner of the campground, walk-in tent site #31 sits on a low ridge near the lake. This site offers the most privacy and has its own shoreline access.

A south-facing, sandy swimming beach is in the middle of the campground. The water is crystal-clear, and the shallows have a sand and pebble bottom. A small, shady picnic area is spread out behind the swimming beach.

The public boat landing is near the campground entrance and features a paved ramp with a launch pier, trailer turnaround, paved trailer-parking area, and vault toilets.

Trails & Places

The south end of the Clear Lake-Indian Mounds Paved Bicycle Path is at Highway 47, across from Tomahawk Rd. The bike path is 5.6 miles long, point-2-point, and connects the Indian Mounds Campground, Clear Lake Campground, and Raven Trails with the picnic area on the north shore of Clear Lake. The pedestrian-only trail provides fun, family rides, walking, or jogging.

Mountain Bikers will enjoy the Raven Trail System, 3.5 miles from the campground. There are 25 miles of single-track and double-track in multiple loops with varying levels of difficulty, plus a skills course. Overall, expect lots of short rolling hills through a scenic hardwood, pine, and hemlock forest.

The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest offers abundant recreation opportunities for silent sports enthusiasts. These include hiking trails, nature trails, paddle trails, mountain bike trail systems, and over 52 miles of paved bicycle paths. Visit the NH-AL website for more info. The campground makes an excellent basecamp for enjoying everything the area has to offer. The communities of Minocqua and Woodruff are only minutes away by car, offering groceries, sporting goods, souvenir shops, restaurants, and pubs.

Season

The campground is open and closed depending on snow conditions (not plowed).
