Brunet Island State Park lies at the confluence of the Chippewa River and Fisher River. Several lagoons and narrow channels provide fun opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The Park also features hiking trails through hardwood forests and open fields; including a two-mile segment of the Ice Age Trail.

There are two family campgrounds at Brunet Island State Park, the South Campground and the North Campground. The South Campground has 24 electric sites in a hardwood and pine forest available for tent and RV/trailer camping; 19 are back-in and 5 are pull-through (length varies). Site #7e is the Campground host. All sites offer at least partial shade. None have river views. Campground amenities include drinking water and a shower building with accessible heated showers and flush toilets that is available for all campers in the park. All 23 campsites require reservations.

The park’s main day-use area is within short walking distance of the South Campground and features expansive shady picnic areas, an open lawn, a wide sandy swimming beach, children’s playground, a reservable shelter, access to hiking trails and a ball field. A boat landing is on the east side of the island and offers a paved ramp, launch pier, turnaround, and trailer parking.

The North Campground offers 45 non-electric campsites in a pine and hardwood forest. All 45 sites are available for tent and RV/trailer camping; 5 are pull-through and 40 are back-in only (length varies). Many of the sites are waterfront on either the Chippewa River or one of two small bays. All sites offer partial to full shade. Amenities at the North Campground are limited to drinking water and vault toilets. The shower building in the South Campground is about a half-mile walking distance from most of the sites in the North Campground.

An accessible fishing pier is at the base of the bay in the North Campground. Another is located along the Chippewa River near the South Campground.

An RV dump station is just north of the park headquarters building on the main park road. The station is free for all registered campers and is open throughout the warm-weather camping season.

Trails & Places

The north trailhead of the Old Abe State Trail is inside Brunet Island State Park on Park Rd, about 150 yards south and east of the road bridge that connects the mainland with the island. It is a short ride from either campground on the park’s paved roads to the trailhead. The Old Abe Trail is a 19.5 mile (point-2-point) paved pedestrian rail-trail that runs through woodlands, agricultural areas, and several scenic stretches along the Chippewa River.

Season

The South Campground is open from mid-April through November. The North Campground is open from May through October.
