TRAIL NOTES
Minocqua Winter Park is an amazing place. Hands down, one of the best cross-country skiing destinations in Wisconsin, especially for families. What sets this place apart is that it excels in so many areas: often impeccable grooming, gorgeous scenery, variety of terrain, variety of scenery, and a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. There's also a warm and cozy chalet, a great tubing hill, a small ice skating pond, quality equipment rentals and sales, a restaurant with hot food, and a full-time ski patrol.
They groom the trails here often and well! The skating lanes on many of the trails are wide and edge-to-edge flat. When there's adequate snow, count on the groomed classic-tracks to be deep, solid, and true (they don't wander left and right).
The scenery is beautiful and varied: stands of tall red pines, spruce, and balsam fir, rolling hills with immature mixed hardwoods, glades of aspen/birch, frozen kettle ponds, lake views (Lake Marie), river views (Squirrel River), and a huge open tamarack bog named the "Yukon Swamp" with a trail that crosses it.
This is a great place for families. There are several children's programs, and your kids (and adults) will enjoy the tubing hill and the ice skating pond. Several scenic and easy trails provide a fun loop-tour suitable for kids: Silver Strider - XC Express - Mellow Meadow - Island Hop - Yukon Trail - XC Express - Creek Trail (once you get back on the Yukon Trail, trail signs will direct you back to the Chalet). It sounds like a complicated route but once you're on it, it'll be easy to figure out! (grab a paper trail map from the chalet).
Minocqua Winter Park seems to have a special, warm, and relaxed atmosphere - even tourists from Chicago will smile and say hello! In fact, many of the people you pass on the trails will smile and say Hi.
A warning to first-timers! The 'warren' of trails at MWP can make this is an easy place to get lost in. Don't worry though, there are clearly marked trail markers and trail map signs at every intersection, so you'll quickly be able to figure out where you are. And - to be honest - you probably won't mind getting lost here. Just remember to relax and have fun!!!
