Trail Review

LaSalle Falls are located in northeastern Wisconsin just south of Florence, near the border with Upper Michigan. This scenic waterfall occurs where the Pine River roars down 20 foot-long 'slide' between a pair of rocky ledges into a beautiful, small gorge surrounded by cedar, pine, and birch trees. Even though LaSalle Falls has more length than height, they are still the highest waterfall in this part of the state. The net effect is a rugged, intimate, and scenic area... well worth a visit.

By Wisconsin standards this is a wild and remote waterfall surrounded by miles of undeveloped forest. There are no viewing platforms, fences, or railings and you will literally be able to stand directly above the falls on one of the rock ledges. Exercise caution whenever you're close to the falls or rapids.

There are several other waterfalls within an hour's drive of LaSalle Falls that are also worth visiting: Smalley Falls, Long Slide Falls, 12 Foot Falls, 18 Foot Falls, and Piers Gorge (MI). With the numerous hiking trails, biking trails and campgrounds in the nearby Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, camping and visiting all six waterfalls makes for an excellent weekend trip.

Camping

Laura Lake, Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

Laura Lake Campground offers a fun northwoods camping experience next to two scenic, clear-water lakes, Laura Lake (110 acres) and Gordon Lake (50 acres). A mixed-pine and hardwood forest canopy undeveloped shorelines on both lakes. Each lake has a boat landing, and both are restricted to non-motorized use, creating excellent opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and SUP boarding. Anglers will find panfish, smallmouth and largemouth bass. Picnic tables, grills and a swimming beach are located in the shady day-use area on Gordon Lake. A scenic, 2.3-mile hiking trail loops around Laura Lake.

There are 41 campsites in the family campground which is situated on the southwest shore of Laura Lake. Roughly 19 have at least partial views of the lake. All the sites offer plenty of shade and 39 can accommodate tents and/or an RV up to 24-to-70 feet (max length varies). Each site has a tent pad, parking spur, picnic table and fire ring. Two sites are tent only. Amenities include drinking water and vault toilets. There are no electric hookups. 22 sites are reservable, 19 are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Morgan Lake, Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

Beautiful Morgan Lake Campground sits on the south shore of Morgan Lake. The non-motorized, 45-acre lake has clear waters and is surrounded by a mixed-pine and hardwood forest. There is a shady picnic area, swimming beach and boat landing.

The family campground features 18 shady campsites and a group site separate from the main campground for privacy. All the sites can accommodate tents, or RV’s up to 25-to-40 feet (max length varies). Each site has a tent pad, parking spur, picnic table and fire ring. Amenities include drinking water and accessible vault toilets. There are no electric hookups. Eight of the individual sites and the group site are reservable.
